Robert Ghanem |
| Robert I Ghanem was born in Saghbine
, West Bekaa. He received his baccalaureate from Notre Dame de Jamhour
Jesuit School. While completing his licence in French and Lebanese Law
at St. Joseph University's Faculty of Law, he started working as Secretary
of the Foreign Committe in the Parliament (1962-1965). He was admitted
to bar in Beirut and opened an office of his own in the capital to practice
law. In 1978, he established an office in Paris and became legal counsellor
for multinational corporations during fifteen years where he formed world
wide legal and business connections. Member of the Board of many prominent
international and national companies.
Married in 1975 to Viviane Haddad. Two children: Alexandre and Nadeem. Counsellor of the Minister of National
Education in 1970 and of the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs in 1976.
Deputy in the Lebanese Parliament since 1992 representing the Bekaa region.
Member and Chairman of the Education, Technical Education and Culture committee.
Member of the parliamentary committee of Administration and Justice, 1992-1995.
Member of the high commission for trying Presidents and Ministers, 1992-1995.
Minister of National Education, Youth and sports, 1995-1996. During
his office as Minister, he completely reformed the educational system that
had been in place since 1968 in order to meet the new standards of education
and bridge the gap between secondary studies, higher education and the
workplace. He also established a program of civic education to foster a
sense of civic responsibility among the Lebanese youth. Member of the parliamentary
committees of Information, Telecommunications, Economy, Trade, Industry
and Oil, 1997-present. He participated in several inter-parliamentary sessions
since 1964 as secretary of delegation, and since 1995 in governmental and
parliamentary delegations in Europe, Japan, China and the Middle-East.
